The event you have been waiting for!
The 12th annual "SMOKE on the WATER" is coming to town the weekend of October 23rd and 24th. As always, the centerpiece event is the Barbecue Contest. Barbecue masters from around the state will set up shop along Stewart Parkway Friday evening and begin preparations. As the cooking gets underway, judges will evaluate the showmanship of all contestants. The judges present their awards at the conclusion of a tour of the cooking area. Then the hard work of the pit masters begins. Using their secret recipes, they must carefully monitor the pigs to maintain proper temperature and moisture through the night.
On Saturday morning, the finished product is judged by certified Barbecue cook-off professionals. Contest winners are announced at 11:00. Pulled pork sandwiches are available shortly after the judging is complete. Sandwiches and beverages will be on sale all day.
In addition to the barbecue, there will be a Chili Contest Saturday morning. You are welcome to join us and sample the entries and compare your favorites with the winners chosen by the veteran judges. Bowls of chili will also be available throughout the afternoon. The cooking events will go on, rain or shine.
Members of the Downeast Rods and Classics Car Club will be hoping for a beautiful, sunny day. The waterfront parkway will be bumper to bumper with prizewinning vehicles from the past.
In addition to these events, The Arts Council Fine Arts Show has extended hours Friday and all day Saturday. On Friday night, bring your children for a pumpkin carving contest at Main and Gladden. Or, bring your costumed dogs to parade on the Parkway Saturday at 2:00. A children's storytelling event will take over the Red Caboose yard early Saturday at 12:30.
As a special treat throughout the day Saturday, the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association will sponsor groups of musicians as well as perform live from the stage area at the foot of Respess Street.
Saturday will be a great day to visit downtown! Support your local merchants, honor the memory of Gary Tomasulo , visit the unique vendors selling everything from fresh made ice cream and funnel cake to handcrafted jewelry and fresh produce. While you are at it, don't forget to "pig out" on the barbecue and chili!
